The Bastardy Camellia

I've always adored and lusted for Camellias but never had one. While my mother was alive she always discouraged me. And now i see why. -almost all of it's buds fell off within days, and it has only been able to procure one blossom, lord knows if the remaining buds will fall off as well...i might just have to move to Cornwall.

I have absolutely no gardening expertise at all. Wish I could help. Beauty never lasts, does it? They are gorgeous, though, definitly worth the effort. If I could do something other than what I do now, (I don't know what it is I do, actually!!!) I would be a moss farmer. And I am serious, Tutta! Have saved articles about moss farming for years! Can you imagine - slathering yogurt on rocks for a living!? I would do it. I LOVE moss! Can you imagine when people google 'moss' and find this comment! They will think I'm nuts!
Good luck my friend,
Catherine

Dear Tutta,

I can relate; I coveted my neighbor's old-wood Camelias for years, watching them thrive against the South-facing brick of their house, ever green and glossy in winter and filled with blooms all summer (or so it seems to me now). When I moved, I vowed to get one, but the nursery near me discouraged me, and I never gave it a shot. Just look at it this way; at least you tried! And also there's this; when readying for a garden show, a gardener will cull almost all the other buds to send the plant's energy to just one, or a few blooms. Your Camelia gave all it's remaining energy to one glorious bloom just for you! Enjoy it!

Don't give up; it probably needs some stabilizing and/or tweaking of it's environment (as do we all, she said as she went to clean the kitchen... *sigh*)

Maybe it will benefit from the longer, warmer days of spring? Do you plan to move it outside for the warmer months?

Good luck!

What a beautiful blossom it is!

Living in northern California we get tremendous, over-laden, thriving camellias. But of course we don't have the marvelous snow from your previous post. Just rain if we are lucky! I'll dream of your real winter while you dream of my camellia. Fair enough.
With best wishes,
Karima

I so totally didnt write that but I thought it was fitting here. LOL
